The next Outlast game has been announced – and it’s co-op

Multiplayer is headed to the world of survival-horror game Outlast, with a new instalment called The Outlast Trials. Just announced by developer-publisher Red Barrels, the game isn’t a “direct sequel” to previous Outlast games, but will let you team up with up to three pals to take on trials in the same universe – “more precisely, right in the middle of the Cold War era.”

Players in the game, Red Barrels reveals, will be “test subjects,” which means you’ll be taking part in some kind of experiment – though it’s not yet clear what this might be. “Our team is hard at work creating a new experience that will bring fear and anxiety to millions of players,” studio co-founder David Chateauneuf says, “whether they go through the experiments alone or with friends.”

So, you’ll be able to take on the game as a single-player or co-op experience – a bit of a new direction for the series, which has so far seen players take on its horrors solo.
