Now that Ubisoft’s experiment in original television, Apple+ series Mythic Quest: Raven’s Banquet, has met with a broadly positive response, it seems the publisher wants to try it again – this time with a film about boomers playing esports. Ubisoft is partnering with the folks behind the Amy Schumer comedy I Feel Pretty to make the movie.
Ubisoft Film and Television producers Jason Altman and Margaret Boykin will work with the writer-director duo, Abby Kohn and Marc Silverstein on the project, as Deadline reports. The film will chronicle the rise of an esports team made up of senior citizens, as they compete in the youth-dominated field of competitive gaming.
If that sounds a lot like the Lenovo-sponsored CS:GO team, Silver Snipers, there’s a good reason why. For the film, Ubisoft has acquired the rights to a 2019 Wall Street Journal article titled ‘The Next Generation of Competitive Gamers Is…Over 60?‘, which profiles the team. No word yet on how directly the movie will follow the real-life players.
Personally, I hope the producers invent a whole load of entirely ridiculous, fake multiplayer games to support the movie. It’s been too long since we’ve seen a lot of good, bad fake videogames in movies.
Ubisoft is also working on a load of animated TV projects, too – last year, word came out about everything from a tween-focused Watch Dogs cartoon to an 80s-infused adaptation of Far Cry: Blood Dragon.
